Our Apples

Seventeen varieties,
one unforgettable orchard

From the first Zestar in August to the last Haralson in December. Picked from our own trees and from fellow Minnesota growers we’ve worked with for years — and sold on the farm where Thor planted the first tree in 1948.

Here's what makes an orchard apple different: a grocery-store apple is picked, packed, trucked across the country, warehoused, trucked again, and handled by a dozen hands before it ever reaches yours. Ours go from the tree to our cooler to the table — and nobody touches them in between. That's why they stay crisp. That's the difference you can taste.

No semis, no warehouses, no stockrooms. Orchard to table.

Ten of our seventeen varieties were bred by the University of Minnesota — where our founder, Professor Thor Aamodt, taught horticulture and entomology. These apples aren't just grown here. They're from here.

Pick-your-own — how it works

What’s picking today is always at the top of this page. Pick-your-own runs daily 10am–5pm whenever apples are ready, through about the second week of October. A few things that keep it working for everyone:

  • Buy your bag first. Two sizes, prepaid. Some days that’s inside the Apple Barn; on busy days it’s the big blue trailer out by the rows we’re picking. Either way, the bag comes before the apples.
  • Our bags only. No outside bags, baskets, buckets, or other containers in the orchard.
  • Pick in the marked rows. Staff will point you to the varieties that are ready; the rest of the orchard is still growing.
  • No eating in the orchard. Every apple on a tree is for sale.
  • No throwing apples. Kids included, please. A dropped apple is a bruised apple.
  • As nature allows. Varieties open and close with the harvest — check the top of this page or call before you drive.

From the Kitchen & Food Court

The kitchen in the Apple Barn serves every day we're open. New for 2026, the food court out front brings the brat trailer, snack shack, and kettle corn together in one spot on fall weekends. No tickets, no reservations — walk up.

Apple Brat

The original apple bratwurst — invented here in the mid-’80s and still made locally to our own secret recipe, with 10% real apple for that flavor and juiciness. Plenty have tried to match it; our customers will tell you nobody has. Grilled and served on a jumbo bun with sauerkraut and the fixings.

Chris' Apple Brat

The house version: the apple brat piled with our coleslaw, chopped Honeycrisp, bacon, and bleu cheese. Named after the guy who eats the most of them.

Hot Dog

A classic all-beef dog on a jumbo bun. For the kids, and everyone who says they're ordering for the kids.

Apple Meat Stix, Cheese & Honeycrisp

Apple snack sticks, cheddar cubes, and two slices of Honeycrisp. The walk-around lunch.

Honeycrisp Apple Cheese Tray

Sliced Honeycrisp and cheddar, plain and simple.

Caramel Apple Slices

Fresh Honeycrisp slices with Abdallah’s homemade caramel. All the caramel apple, none of the wrestling.

Chips & Honeycrisp Salsa

Our own Honeycrisp apple salsa with tortilla chips. Sweet, a little heat.

Cup of Chris' Slaw

The coleslaw from the brat, on its own: cabbage, apple, bleu cheese, and bacon.

Kettle Corn

Popped fresh in the kettle at the booth, sweet and salty, by the bag. You'll smell it before you see it.

Fresh Apple Cider

Non-alcoholic, our own label, pressed fresh each fall. Hot or cold by the cup, or take a jug home.

Ice Cream

Vanilla by the cup — for apple pie or crisp à la mode.

Est. 1948

Four generations.
One orchard.

In 1948, Thor and Lucille Aamodt purchased land along the St. Croix River Valley. Post-war optimism, a young family, and a dream. They planted the first apple trees with their son Tom by their side.

Thor wasn't just any farmer. He was Minnesota's State Entomologist and a University of Minnesota professor of horticulture — when the state's own apple scientist chose this hillside above the St. Croix for his orchard, he knew exactly what he was planting, and why. That knowledge has been handed down the same way the land has: one generation to the next.

In 1974, Thor and Lucille passed the orchard to their son Tom and his wife JoAnn. Tom and JoAnn ran it for the next fourteen seasons, keeping family at the center of everything, until 1988, when their son Chris took over full-time.

Four generations later, the farm has grown to over 50 acres and more than 6,000 trees. Chris Aamodt and his wife Billi Jo now run the operation—continuing what Thor started nearly eight decades ago.

The 2025 Stillwater Christmas tree—a big blue spruce—was originally planted at the orchard by Thor himself. Sharing that tree with the community was a big honor for our family. Aamodt's isn't just an apple farm. It's woven into the identity of this town.

Today, on a big fall Saturday, it feels like the whole county came out to the orchard. They come for the Honeycrisp. They stay for the pie. They come back because it feels like coming home.

What we do — and what we don't

We don't charge admission. We never have. No gate, no parking fee, no ticket to walk under the trees. Bring the grandparents, bring the stroller, come twice in one weekend if the weather's right — it costs nothing to be here. You pay for the apples and the pie, not for the afternoon.

And we've stayed what we've always been: an apple farm. Not a theme park, not a carnival. The orchard is the attraction — the wagon rides, the animals, and the bakery are all here because they belong on a farm, not because they sell tickets. That's a choice, made fresh every year for four generations.

Free admission. Free parking. Since 1948.

Good questions, honest answers

Is there an admission fee?+

No — walking in is always free. Weekend activities range from free to about $6 per child.

Are dogs allowed?+

Yes, on a leash — though not inside any of the buildings (service dogs excepted).

When are Honeycrisp apples ready?+

Typically in the last two weeks of August, right around Labor Day — some years earlier. Watch our apple availability above for exact timing.

Can I pick my own apples?+

Yes — today it’s Honeycrisp, SweeTango, First Kiss, Chestnut Crab & Dolgo Crab. Pick-your-own runs daily 10am–5pm whenever apples are available, through about the second week of October. Buy your bag first — two sizes, prepaid, in the barn or at the blue trailer out by the rows on busy days — then pick in the designated rows. Our bags only; no eating or throwing apples in the orchard.

Do birthday parties need a reservation?+

No reservations, no fee. Arrive early, grab a couple of picnic tables out back, and make it your own. You may bring a birthday cake — that’s the one outside-food exception. Full details.

Can we bring our own food?+

Outside food and beverages aren’t permitted — but between the bakery, the brat trailer, the snack shack, and the kettle corn booth, nobody leaves hungry.

Do you host bus groups or school field trips?+

Bus and senior groups are welcome — there are no structured tours; guests shop, snack, and explore at their own pace. Let us know in advance (arrival time and headcount) and confirm the day before. We don’t reserve tables, and we no longer offer school field trips or educational programs. Full details.

Do you close for the winter?+

We never fully close — after the holidays we shift to Saturdays only in January, then Saturday and Sunday from mid-February.

Is the farm handicap accessible?+

Yes — designated parking and ramps into the buildings.

Where are you, exactly?+

Just west of Stillwater on Manning Ave N. From Highway 36, go north on Manning — we're the first left-turn lane.
